SINGAPORE (May 05, 2010) – New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia, NYU’s first campus outside of New York City, will celebrate its first commencement on May 07 2010, at Capella Singapore.
“This commencement is a milestone in the history of New York University, Tisch School of the Arts and Tisch School of the Arts Asia,” said Pari Sara Shirazi, president of Tisch School of the Arts Asia. The ceremony will follow traditional elements of the graduation activities held in New York with added elements from the school’s home in Southeast Asia.
Pulitzer Prize winning writer Doug Wright will be the honored speaker. Mr. Wight, a 1987 Tisch alumnus, is a Tony Award winner and has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe award.

New York University was founded in 1831 and celebrated its first commencement in 1833. The arts had been a part of the university for many years. In 1939 the filmmaking program was introduced. In 1965, the arts were formally organized, and the School of the Arts was established. Additional departments were later added, and with a gift from Laurence A. and Preston Tisch in 1982, the school was renamed Tisch School of the Arts.
New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia opened its doors in Singapore in 2007, offering its renowned Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in Film. MFA programs in Animation and Digital Arts, Dramatic Writing, and International Media Producing were added the following year.
Mary Schmidt Campbell has served as dean of the school since 1991. Shirazi has served as vice dean of the school since 1999. Campbell was named chair of the Board of Directors Tisch School of the Arts Asia, and Shirazi was named president of the school. One year later, Oliver Stone agreed to serve as artistic director.
