New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia held its third commencement at the School of the Arts in Singapore on May 13, 2012. Renowned Hollywood producer Clayton Townsend addressed the 38 graduates, along with their families and friends, many of whom traveled long distances to attend the ceremony. Members of Tisch Asia’s Board of Directors and Trustees, Ms Jennie Chua, Mrs. Kwan Lui and Mrs. Fang Ai Lian, were part of the platform party. The Ambassadors of Kuwait, Spain and Thailand and the High Commissioner of South Africa also attended the ceremony.
Victoria Soberal ‘12 (MFA Film) delighted the audience with her a capella rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow to open the ceremony. Student speaker Christopher Rebbert ’12 (MFA Dramatic Writing) surprised the audience by turning his speech into a short sketch with his fellow graduate, Matthew McRee ’12 (MFA Dramatic Writing).
Marttise Roosevelt Hill ’12 (MFA Film), president of the Tisch Asia Student Council, in his address to the graduating class said to his classmates, “Thank you for making Tisch Asia a community like no other... We have forged bonds that will bind us together for a lifetime.”
Mark Dickerman, associate dean of faculty, advised the graduates to “sleep and dream, awaken and face the new. Honor what is inside you… your dream is what you need to depend on in all circumstances… Persevere, live with love. Success is great but living with others, engaging others, however you do that… that is everything.” He also urged students to listen to their intuition and to find silence in order to be inspired.
The ceremony closed with a reception at the School of the Arts, Singapore, celebrating the academic and creative achievements of the Class of 2012.
