Designing Animated Characters: Character Development
. 4 Credits
This class shows how to create an original portrait of a character that is later developed visually and fully animated. Students build from scratch a character’s identity and design the environment surrounding a character’s ‘life‘. They explore ways to build the dimensions of the character from psychological principles, gender, the relationship with the environment and other story elements. This preliminary process shapes the visual design of the animated character. The design includes early sketches, clay sculptures, digital 3D models, 3D scans, texturing and fully animated 2D and 3D renderings. Future directions in character design, for example expressing emotions and the evolution of a character through time, are also covered in the class.
