Summer High School Program

NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia invites high school sophomores and juniors to learn animation, filmmaking or train in musical theatre at our campus in Singapore. This compact city-state in Southeast Asia offers a unique environment for students to develop the techniques for producing narrative and documentary film projects, and the acting, dance, and vocal skills necessary for musical theatre. This tropical urban island is a place where east and west converge; the country itself is home to people of Chinese, Malay, and Indian descent and the country’s official languages are English (English is the language of business, technology, and instruction), Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil.

There are vibrant arts districts, ethnic neighborhoods, and annual festivals; cultural offerings that are sure to influence a student’s craft. A significant portion of the island has been set aside for recreation and nature conservation, making it one of Asia’s best cities for outdoor activities.

Singapore has low crime rates, a warm, year-round tropical climate, a wide array of scenic locations, modern facilities, advanced telecommunications, and excellent shopping and dining choices. Students will find Singapore to be an ideal educational backdrop.

High School students will study at Tisch School of the Arts Asia’s three-acre campus in the central region of Singapore. The 40,000-square-foot educational center was completely renovated in 2007 to feature sound stages, animation studios, a black box theater, two screening rooms with 16mm, 35mm and video projection, state-of-the-art Mac and PC workstations, a foley room, sound engineering stations, editing labs, and a script and film library.

Students will have a rich cultural experience exploring Singapore through cultural tours of ethnic neighborhoods, museum visits, and day trips to traditional villages. In addition, students will attend performances, screenings, and talks from local and international industry professionals that will serve to enhance the classroom experience.

Each program is four weeks long. Students receive six credits in Animation, Filmmaking and Musical Theatre production courses, plus an Arts & Culture course.
