Children's Animation for Television

H64.2124.901       4 Credits

Instructor: Thomas Thesen

The goal of the class is to explore and produce ideas and concepts that are relevant for a children television show. Students will work in teams developing the main idea of the show, writing a pitch, scripting and animating scenes and dialogues. They will create scenes with animated characters and with direct live action, actors or puppets composited over animation. Students will focus on storyline, character-design, background-direction and a test-animation, in order to convey the intended look and feel of the show. Students will go through the whole process of planning a show, producing segments and presenting tests to groups of children. They will create designs, characters and backgrounds and assemble a professional portfolio that can be use to present concepts and ideas to producers.

Assignments will include very short animations, trailers and studio production sessions using a hybrid of live action, actors or puppets, composited with animated characters and backgrounds. The class will be accompanied by talks and Skype sessions with professionals from the children television industry. This course is open to Dramatic Writing and Film students.
