This class helps students to understand fundamentals of animation and what the art of motion can encompass. Students can develop new ways of thinking about visual design and encouraging them to experiment in new directions. Students animate simple objects, create hand-drawn animations, stop-motion animations, and use other media such as video, kinetic sculptures, light, photographs, music, text and graphics in the context of animation. Early assignments familiarize them with equipment and software in conjunction with various animation techniques. Students gain experience working with the Photoshop, After Effects, Flash, Stop Motion Pro, Soundbooth and Final Cut Pro. They are introduced to Maya and to the motion capture lab. Students follow progressive exercises covering the principles of animation, bouncing balls, walk cycles, lipsync, gesture, collage, and stop motion. These exercises lead up to a 30-second final project based on a script and utilizing techniques chosen by the student. Emphasis is placed on writing a short script, development of concept, sound, design, performance, and editing. Students are also exposed to cultural trends and history of Asian animation through visits of animation studios, meetings with professionals, film screenings of old and new animations by the best in the field, such as Pixar, Disney, Chuck Jones, Miyazaki, Oshi, comics, manga. Daily sessions are divided into lecture, lab, talks, screenings and visits outside the campus.
